Our peer support network continues to grow, with five new groups joining Alike WA this month.
Each brings its own community, experience and approach to peer support. Together, they connect people through shared experience, practical support and opportunities to belong.
We’re pleased to welcome our newest members and introduce the communities they support.
Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia
Based in Osborne Park, the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia supports people affected by asbestos and related chronic respiratory diseases, as well as their families.
The organisation has supported the community since 1979. It provides support groups alongside medical and legal services to help people navigate the impact of asbestos-related disease.
Safe Space Blackwood | Bridgetown Greenbushes Suicide Prevention Network
Safe Space Blackwood provides a weekly drop-in space in Bridgetown for people experiencing mental health distress, including suicidal distress.
Lived-experience peer volunteers provide non-clinical support. The space gives people an opportunity to connect with others who may understand what they are going through.
Creative Connections Through Art
Creative Connections Through Art is a Maylands-based social art group for women aged 20 and over with lived experience of mental health issues. Members come together over art and coffee in an informal setting.
Importantly, the group describes itself as a social group rather than a therapy group.
Neurofibromatosis Association of Western Australia
The Neurofibromatosis Association of Western Australia supports people living with neurofibromatosis and their families. It offers information, peer support, advocacy and opportunities to connect.
Its peer community includes monthly social groups at The Niche in Nedlands, along with other gatherings and events.
Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre
The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre supports people impacted by type 1 diabetes. Its focus is helping people feel confident, capable and connected.
Based in Stirling, the organisation offers peer support groups, events and other services both online and in person.
Finding peer support in WA
Peer support looks different from one community to another. What connects our member groups is the opportunity to meet others through shared experience and find understanding, connection and support.
